The February “Hike the Hennepin” is named after our nation’s bird, the “Bald Eagle”.  The group organizers hope to get a glimpse of our nation’s symbol as they start the hike at the Mississippi River.  The hike is on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at 1:30 PM, from Lock 30 to Lock 32, and is 4.6 miles.

Hikers should meet at the Steel Dam in Milan by 1:30 pm and then be shuttled to the Mississippi to begin the walk back.  To get to the meeting spot, take I-80 to I-280 and take exit 15 in Milan onto E. 1st Ave. (Airport Road), going towards Milan.  Take the first road on the right (Frontage Road) and follow it to the right to 14th St. NE, past the warehouses, and back to the steel dam.

The Friends of the Hennepin Canal developed the monthly hikes as an opportunity for everyone to get to know the canal personally by hiking it from the Illinois River to the Mississippi (including the Feeder Canal) in small walks.

You need not be a member of the Friends to join us on any of the hikes. There is no fee for the hikes. Come and join in the fun, and bring a friend. We ask that you dress appropriately for the weather.
